Fire Fighting and Municipality Gases

Find a Partner Near You

While the safest way to deal with fire is to prevent it, fires may erupt anytime without warning. Firefighters and municipalities must be ready for any eventualities. At Meritus Gas Partners, we have the specialized gases used in fire suppression systems and fire detection. Our partners have been in the gas business for a long time and have all the gases you need for fire suppression and detection. Municipalities can coordinate with a local partner to ensure a steady and reliable gas supply for firefighting and municipal needs.

Fire Fighting Gases

There are many ways to extinguish a fire, including water, powder and foam. However, most fire suppression systems use gas to put out fires and do not need cleanup afterward. At Meritus Gas Partners, we supply firefighting gases to fire stations and municipalities to prepare them for fire outbreaks.

Fire Suppression Systems

While many fire suppression systems use water sprinklers, you can’t use water in areas with sensitive equipment. This is why places such as server rooms, museums, power plants, data centers and areas with hazardous materials require gas to suppress fires. Gaseous suppression minimizes the damage to the equipment and products and reduces clean-ups.

Some of the gases used in fire suppression include:

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a prevalent fire-suppression gas. It has a high density and falls to the floor, separating the fire from the oxygen it needs to keep going and smother it. While it is a very effective fire suppression method, you should only use it if the building is vacant, as a lack of oxygen can harm humans. When CO2 is discharged, it turns from liquid in the cylinder to gas, which involves high pressure. If you don’t have the proper hose and horn fitted, the kick from the fire extinguisher may cause injuries.

One advantage of using CO2 to suppress fires is its environmental friendliness. It is a naturally occurring gas and is not harmful to the environment or the ozone layer. It is also lightweight and easy to handle, making it ideal for electrical fires.

FM-200 is a clean-agent fire suppression system that uses hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) to suppress fires. The HFCs are safe for use in occupied spaces, unlike CO2. FM-200 extinguishes electrical fires, combustibles and flammable liquid fires in 10 seconds or less by heat absorption. However, HFCs have a higher Global Warming Potential (GWP) than other fire suppression materials, so they are not as eco-friendly.

Novec 1230 is a clean agent developed in place of halon gas and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), which are ozone-depleting and are in the halocarbons family. It is stored as a liquid and vaporizes when discharged to suppress a fire. It cools the fire quickly and has low ozone-depleting potential, so it is environmentally friendly. It is also safe to use in human-occupied places.

An inergen system uses inert gases like nitrogen, argon and CO2 to minimize the oxygen levels around the fire and suppress it. The gas concentration of inergen systems is safe for use in human-occupied spaces.

Gas Supplier Coordination

Creating strong partnerships with gas suppliers like Meritus Gas Partners ensures a steady and reliable gas supply for their diverse uses. All our partners are ready to supply you with the gases and quantities you need them in. Meritus Gas Partners has the necessary certification, and our gases have been tested for quality to ensure we provide you with high-quality gases.

For municipalities and fire departments, we offer:

Breathing Air

Breathing air system compressors are vital for firefighters when saving lives. Meritus Gas Partners is proud to offer our public servants breathing air systems and services. Our partners refill SCBA, SCUBA and cascade cylinders with quality-tested breathing air and meet industry safety standards. Our service to our fire departments and municipalities is highly esteemed.

Fire Detection Systems

Fire detection systems are groups of devices connected to a central control panel that enables one to respond to a fire. They also warn the building’s residents and may call the emergency services or security personnel. Fire detection systems are crucial in early fire detection and ensuring people’s safety and property protection. There are several types of fire detection systems:

  • Smoke detectors
  • Heat detectors
  • Flame detectors
  • Gas detectors

Fire Detection Systems Integration With Firestop and Fireproofing Measures

Fire detection systems are integrated with your building firestop and fireproofing measures such as fire alarms. Municipalities can integrate their fire suppression system into their fire detection systems. For instance, when the fire alarm goes off, the gases from your fire suppression will engulf the flames, putting out the fire.

Integrating your fire detection systems with fireproofing and firestop measures can save municipalities money and create a common infrastructure communication system. Municipalities and other buildings can integrate different systems, such as:

  • Automatic sprinkler systems
  • HVAC and other air distribution systems
  • Fire extinguisher monitoring
  • Smoke management
  • Security systems
  • Mass notification systems

Industrial Gas Usage

At Meritus Gas Partners, we supply municipalities with chlorine gas for water purification. The gas kills bacteria, parasites and viruses. Industrial gases are also used in various industries to help in different processes. They improve safety and increase efficiency and accuracy in the production processes. Industrial gases are used in:

  • Welding and casting
  • Plastics manufacturing
  • Glass manufacturing
  • 3D printing
  • Electronic manufacturing
  • Thermal spraying
