Argon UHP

Argon UHP

Colorless, odorless, nontoxic argon is the third-most abundant gas in the Earth’s atmosphere. Because argon is inert, it does not have chemical reactions when combined with other substances.

Argon gas is available in various purity levels. Ultra-high purity (UHP) argon is 99.999% pure, making it suitable for numerous industrial and manufacturing applications.

If you’re looking for ultra-high purity-grade argon for your business, a Meritus Gas Partners distributor can meet and even exceed your expectations. We maintain a thriving network of experienced, reliable and independently operated distributors who understand your industry and its unique gas requirements. You’ll also receive the exceptional service you demand and deserve from a local company.

Argon UHP Cost and Availability

Argon is obtained as a byproduct in the production of liquid nitrogen and oxygen via cryogenic air separation. Various external factors can impact argon gas availability and raise its price. An increase in the worldwide demand in multiple industries is making it more difficult to source, resulting in higher costs for manufacturers, distributors and end-users.

Argon UHP Uses and Applications

Ultra-high purity argon has numerous industrial applications:

Because UHP argon is inert, it makes an excellent shielding gas in arc welding processes. It helps protect the molten metal from reacting with other atmospheric gases like carbon dioxide, nitrogen and oxygen to prevent damage to the workpiece.

This process entails the imposition of a combination of inert gas — like argon — with an active antimicrobial gas — like carbon dioxide — to prevent mold and bacteria from growing on packaged foods. The result is a longer product shelf life and a reduced spoilage risk.

As an inert gas, ultra-high argon gas is an excellent choice for heat treatment applications. Argon is typically delivered at a dew point less than minus 75 degrees Fahrenheit and an oxygen content under 20 ppm. Compatible argon-based heat-treating processes include annealing nonferrous metals, sintering and brazing.

Medical professionals use argon gas when administering treatments for various illnesses, injuries and conditions. Argon lasers can correct detachments and other retinal issues and surgically repair arteries. They can also shrink and destroy tumors.

Argon UHP Safety

Although ultra-high purity argon is nontoxic, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration classifies it as a hazardous material. Handlers should wear appropriate personal protective equipment and avoid breathing the gas. Store containers separately in a cool, well-ventilated area and out of direct sunlight. Stand the containers upright with the valve protection cap securely in place. Ensure that the temperature in the storage area does not exceed 125 degrees Fahrenheit.
