Harold and Evelyn McMurtry had big dreams of building a successful family owned welding supply company. With 5 employees, they began their journey in October 1973 by buying the National Cylinder Gas – Nashville Division on 5th Ave in Nashville, TN. Volunteer Welding Supply began to grow in the welding supply business over the next few years by focusing on more than just welding supply.
Our headquarters location in Nashville features a high pressure cylinder filling plant that fills industrial grade and UHP grade gases including argon, carbon dioxide, helium, nitrogen, oxygen and propane. Nashville also has specialty gases laboratory, 76 tons of CO2 storage and a CO2 transport trailer.
Volunteer Welding in Tullahoma fills nitrous oxide, liquid nitrogen dewars, and propane while the Knoxville facility has a high pressure plant that fills nitrogen, oxygen, argon, carbon dioxide and propane. Volunteer Baxter fills liquid nitrogen, liquid oxygen and propane. Our new Jackson location will fill CO2.
A large vendor network is represented in all of our retail locations.
We own and operate a 4,000 gal liquid nitrogen trailer, four (4) CO2 microbulk trucks and a 20 ton CO2 transport trailer.
They slowly became a medical gas leader in Middle Tennessee by taking care of the needs of local hospitals. In 1975, Volunteer placed their first bulk liquid oxygen tank and purchased their first liquid truck. This was the beginning of the Bulk Division of Volunteer Welding Supply.
In 1976, Volunteer Welding became the first gas company in the state to offer bulk beverage CO2 for the hospitality industry. Since their first bulk tank was placed in a Western Sizzler, the division has grown immensely with over 2000 customers in the Southeast.
In 1984, the McMurtry family was presented with a great opportunity to partner with A-Welders & Medical Gases in Knoxville, TN. They jumped at the opportunity and never looked back. A-Welders has been a great partner over the years and are a part of Volunteer’s extended family today.
By 1988, Volunteer Welding was in need of expansion. They had grown so much in the southern Tennessee they needed to add a location to help accommodate their growing customer base. They opened the Tullahoma branch in April and it has continued the growth seen in Nashville over the past decade.
Today, the Volunteer Welding Family continues to grow while the important things have stayed the same. Pleasing people through education, finding the best solutions, and offering exceptional service are still the most important parts of our business. Harold and Evelyn inspired these beliefs in their children and employees and we plan to keep it that for the next generation of McMurtys and their employees.
It’s a family legacy.
